The Emoji Movie (2017)

Hi fellow animation fans, welcome to my review of The Emoji Movie.

Synopsis:
The Emoji Movie reveals a hidden world inside your smartphone. Within the messaging app lies Textopolis, a vibrant city where all your beloved emojis reside, each eager to be chosen by the phone's user. Every emoji has only one facial expression, except for Gene, a lively emoji with a plethora of expressions due to the absence of a filter. Aiming to become "normal" like his counterparts, Gene seeks the assistance of his best friend Hi-5 and Jailbreak, a renowned code breaker. They set off on an adventurous journey across the phone's apps, each a unique and exciting universe, to discover the Code that will repair Gene. However, as a greater threat looms over the phone, the destiny of all emojis rests in the hands of these three unexpected heroes who must rescue their world before it vanishes forever.

Likes:

* The animation is quite well done with a lot of little detail in the colorful backgrounds.

Dislikes:

* That the tone is all wrong, the movie is bright, cheerful and has such a basic script that only those who are young enough not to have a phone will actually deride any enjoyment out of it.
* The horrific and in your face product placement, especially the 5-minute scene all about Just Dance, I seriously would have nodded off if my cat hadn't chosen that moment to jump on my lap.
* None of the jokes made me laugh at all.

                              IMDB 2.5/10       Rotten Tomatoes 10%            Me 1/10
It starts with a poop joke and doesn't get any better.

Despicable Me 3 (2017)

Hi fellow animation fans, welcome to my review of Despicable Me 3.

Synopsis: After being dismissed from the Anti-Villain League for not capturing the newest threat to humanity, Gru (Steve Carell) faces a significant identity crisis. However, when a mysterious stranger reveals that Gru has a long-lost twin brother who yearns to emulate his twin's nefarious ways, this ex-supervillain will reawaken to the thrill of villainy.

The Good:

* The movie soundtrack is awesome, featuring songs such as Bad -Michael Jackson, Take on Me - A-ha and many more thanks to a villain who is stuck in the past.
* The movie will entertain young children for 90 minutes giving you time to clean, have a nap, or anything else you may want to do while the little one is amused, which is what you want from a children's movie.
* Some of the jokes are really funny, which outweighs the ones that fall flat.

The Bad:

* Unlike the previous outings this movie is less family oriented and more aimed directly at children, so as an adult I found some moments to be less exciting than the previous Despicable Me movies.
* There are too many plots so the movie flits from character to character, which is great for the kids as it will keep their attention, but I found the lack of character building to be more annoying than anything else.
* The bad guy really lacked any kind of threat, and his very short back story didn't really feel like motivation enough to become a villain.

                              IMDB 6.3/10              Rotten Tomatoes 61%           Me 5/10

Gru in a mankini, nightmare inducing.
